Home insurance important during Wimbeldon season

Home insurance important during Wimbeldon season

24th June 2008

As Wimbeldon grips the nation and would-be tennis stars take to their back gardens, an insurance company has warned homeowners to make sure their properties are insured against accidental damage.

Halifax has warned that they usually see an increase in home insurance claims as Wimbeldon mania sweeps the country and reported an 18 per cent increase in claims in June last year.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax home insurance, said: "During the summer months we often notice an increase in claims for broken windows and other accidental breakages."

He continued: "We'd advise any budding Murrays and Sharapovas to take care when playing ball sports close to home, and check they are insured for accidental damage should a mishap occur."

According to their research, homeowners in Birmingham and Solihull were most likely to have an accident at home that led to a claim.

Mike Goddard, chief executive of Belvoir Lettings, has explained that homeowners are not always clear about what their home insurance covers.

Mr Goddard explained: "Many people think that if they have some kind of cover they are OK, but having the right value and type of insurance cover is essential."
