Bikers need to get insured

As the price of petrol is hitting 119p per litre, and household bills are soaring, an increasing number of consumers are being tempted to get on their bikes, but they need to make sure they are insured.

That is the advice from price comparison site, moneysupermarket.com, which has warned would-be bikers to make sure their bike is covered by home insurance or a stand-alone policy.

Peter Gerrard explained the benefits of getting standalone insurance: "If your bicycle is an especially valuable model I'd advise weighing up the advantages of separate bike insurance [over putting it on your home insurance]."

He continued: "While stand-alone cover could cost well over the price of adding it on to your existing home policy, it has added benefits such as emergency recovery, replacement hire, and even worldwide use for the cycling enthusiasts who take their bikes abroad."

Halifax has said recently that one bike is stolen in the UK every 65 seconds, with London reportedly being the worst hit area.
