Credit cards could 'give protection against scams'

21st August 2008

Consumers concerned about credit card scams have been advised to buy tickets online with their cards to give themselves protection.

The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) has said that those who pay for tickets with a credit card will be able to claim compensation if they do become the victim of touts selling fake tickets.

Tony Northcott, a spokesperson from the TSI said: "If you pay by debit card you definitely won't get your money back but, if you pay by credit card you'll probably be able to claim it back from your credit card company."

Thousands of people were recently scammed when they tried to buy tickets for the Olympics. Beijingtickets.com were thought to have made close to £5 million from the scam.

Closer to home, the recent V and Reading festivals were targeted by touts. People bought tickers from SOS Ticketmaster and they were never delivered.
